How can I support someone living with depression?

Let them know you care and want to lend a sympathetic ear, without any judgement. You can also encourage them to take some time to do something active, go for a short walk, eat a healthy diet and do things they enjoy while living with depression.1

How can you go about supporting someone with depression?

We’re not saying it’s easy – depression is a complex condition with varying degrees of severity and it can be tough supporting someone with depression. To better understand what someone living with depression is going through, check through the online resources, many of which are provided on this site, and try to educate yourself. You may find information you want to pass on, such as details on what help is available and where to access it. But remember that someone living with depression may find it hard to open up to you and speak about their feelings. Let them know you’re there ready to listen, if and when, they want to talk.2

Keep in contact on a regular basis by phone or text, as people living with depression can often feel isolated, and find it hard to leave home.1

It’s also important to look after yourself. If you want to give the best support to someone, you’ll be better able to help if you’re in a good place, mentally and physically yourself. That’s key to supporting someone with depression.

If the person you’re worried about is expressing suicidal feelings, get in touch with their GP or call NHS 111 which is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week (online: https://111.nhs.uk/ or call 111 for free from a landline or mobile).1 If you think their life is at risk, treat it as an emergency and either take them to A&E or call 999.
